Two BNSF Railroad Workers Killed in Train Crash in SW Iowa

Red Oak, IA — A collision involving two BNSF trains in Southwest Iowa killed two railroad workers. The fatal train collision occurred at 7 a.m., Sunday, April 17, 2011, in McPherson, about five miles west of Red Oak, reported the Omaha World Herald.

According to union officials, the two fatally injured railroad workers were identified as conductor Patricia “Trish” Hyatt and engineer Tom Anderson. Both were 48 years old.

The two BNSF trains were reportedly headed east, when the coal trail rear-ended a train transporting maintenance equipment.

The collision killed the conductor and the engineer of the coal train. The two railroad workers on the other train were uninjured in the accident.

Hyatt and Anderson were the only two people on board the coal train, which was hauling 130 coal cars from Wyoming to Chicago at the time

The collision also caused 10 cars on the maintenance train to derail, along with the lead locomotive on the coal train.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
