Orlando, FL — A toddler was seriously injured after falling from a second-story indoor balcony at the University of Central Florida on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. The boy apparently slipped through a gap between the floor and a window, reported the Orlando Sentinel.
The toddler, 19-month-old Stephen Cary, of Oviedo was at the university with his father Michael Cary, 31, and his two other children, according to police reports.
Stephan and his two brothers were reportedly looking at the Reflecting Pond, when Stephan slipped through the gap that was left from a glass wall that doesn’t meet the floor. The boy fell about 13 feet from the indoor balcony of Milican Hall onto the ground floor.
Responding emergency crews rushed the boy to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando for treatment of skull factures. Stephan will need plastic surgery to repair damage to his face. Doctors say he is expected to recover.
The university has begun inspecting its buildings to help prevent another accident. Plexiglass was placed over the space the boy slipped through.
