Mount Prospect, IL — One person was killed and 29 others were left with injuries after a Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line train slammed into a truck Friday morning, May 13, 2011. The train accident occurred at about 8:40 a.m. at Seger near the Cumberland station in Mount Prospect, reported WGNTV and MyFoxPhoenix.

Police reported that the train was headed inbound from Harvard, when the train slammed into the truck, which was carrying a load of concrete. The truck was headed northwest on Northwest Highway when the accident occurred.

The truck driver, identified as 59-year-old Kazimierz Karasek of Prospect Heights, was killed in the train accident.

The collision threw parts of the truck all over the scene and derailed some of the train’s cars. A fire erupted in one of the train cars as a result of the accident. Passengers broke windows to escape the burning train car.

According to Metra officials, 19 passengers were taken to local hospitals with injuries and 10 were treated at the scene.

“The gates were activated, they were down, the warning lights were on. Our preliminary investigation says everything was functioning properly,” Mount Prospect Police Commander John Wagner said to WGNTV.

Karasek reportedly has a rather questionable driving record. He reportedly had more than 50 traffic citations on his record, as well as a DUI arrest.

Investigations into the train accident are underway.
