Chicago, IL — Twenty students were injured in a school bus accident, while going to Northwestern University on a field trip. The school bus crash occurred at about 11:15 a.m., on Chicago Avenue, near Davis Street in Evanston, reported TribLocal.com.
According to officials, the school was transporting students from Rowe Elementary School, when the bus driver was momentarily distracted before rear-ending another bus from the school.
The bus driver may have been looking in his side mirror when the bus slammed into the back of the other bus, police speculated.
There were 24 students on one bus, and 26 students on the other school bus at the time of the accident.
Responding emergency crews rushed 20 students and an adult to three area hospitals: Evanston Hospital, Skokie Hospital and St. Francis Hospital. Ambulances from Evanston, Winnetka, Wilmette and several other communities responded to the scene.
Chest, neck and lower back pains were among the reported injuries sustained by the victims. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The uninjured students continued on to their field trip.
Investigations are ongoing.
