Suffolk County, MA — A shipyard accident left a 73-year-old Winthrop man dead, after a 3,500-pound winch broke free and fell onto the man. The fatal industrial accident occurred Monday morning, May 16, 2011 at Mullins Marine Service yard in Winthrop, reported Boston.com.
According to officials, the winch broke free of its concrete footings.
“Some stress on that winch occurred, and . . . it slipped off its anchorage,’’ Winthrop building inspector E. James Soper III told Boston.com. “The victim was pinned between the wall and the winch.’’
The Winthrop Fire Department freed the unidentified victim and rushed him to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. A few hours later, he was pronounced dead.
Officials reported that foul play does not appear to have been a factor.
The winch was apparently not sufficiently secured, according to Soper. The anchor bolts were embedded in 2 ½ inches of concrete, and while the boat was being put back in the water, the anchor bolts ripped from the concrete.
Soper also stated that the boatyard did not have proper permits or inspection reports. The area underwent renovation over four years ago.
Investigations into the industrial accident are underway.
