Knoxville, TN — A construction worker was killed on the Henley Bridge Tuesday afternoon, May 24, 2011, when he was hit in the head by a piece of concrete. The fatal construction accident occurred at around 2:39 p.m., on the barge just off the Neyland Greenway along the north bank of Fort Loudoun Lake, reported KnoxNews.com.

According to Knoxville police, the man was hit in the head by a piece of concrete that apparently came loose from a support beam. The victim was standing on a construction barrage that was moored under the bridge. Construction workers were reportedly removing vertical, concrete spandrels attached to one of the bridge’s arches when the accident occurred.

The victim, who was employed by project contractor Britton Bridge LLC, was wearing a hard hat at the time of the construction accident. His identity has yet to be released.

Four coworkers were taken to KPD police headquarters to be interviewed about the accident.

Investigations are ongoing. TOSHA is expected to arrive at the scene to conduct an investigation of its own.
