Manhattan, NY — A chain-reaction crash sent a pickup truck into a crowd of pedestrians, killing an 89-year-old woman in Upper Manhattan. The fatal automobile accident occurred Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the corner of West 145th Street and Seventh Avenue, reported the New York Times.
According to police, a silver Lincoln Town Car livery cab was making a left turn onto 145th Street when a southbound Toyota pickup truck slammed into the car. The impact of the crash catapulted the Town Car onto the sidewalk, where it hit a group of pedestrians.
The woman who was killed, Leonia White, was among that group of pedestrians, which included at least three other people.
White was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. The driver of the livery cab and three pedestrians were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. All of the victims were listed in stable condition.
Police officials are investigating the crash. No criminality is suspected.
