Iowa City, IA — A Washington company is facing $14,000 in fines, stemming from a fatal construction accident in January at the University of Iowa art building. Iowa Bridge and Culvert Inc. was cited with six “serious” safety violations by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), reported the Iowa City Press Citizen.
As previously reported in, “Construction worker pinned underneath a beam at Univ. of Iowa, Killed,” Kevin D. Hammons, 52, of Washington, died at the scene on Jan. 24. The man was killed after he became trapped underneath a beam along the shore of a pond near the art building.
Hammons was working on a project that was intended to protect a flooded art building from future water damage.
OSHA inspection reports show that Iowa Bridge was initially fined $20,000, but it was later reduced to $14,000 through an informal settlement.
Iowa Bridge was cited for violating rules related to fall protection systems, excavation requirements and requirements related to protective systems.
