Wildwood, NJ — An 11-year-old girl fell from a Ferris wheel, leaving her dead in Wildwood, New Jersey. The fatal accident occurred around 12:30 p.m., Friday, June 3, 2011 at Morey’s Mariner’s Landing Pier located at Schellenger Avenue and the Boardwalk, reported 6ABC.com.
Abiah Jones, 11, fell from the Ferris wheel onto the passenger loading area below while the ride was in motion.
Responding emergency crews airlifted Jones to Cap Regional Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Police reported that it doesn’t appear at this time that Jones was pushed or she jumped from the carnival ride. It looks like it was just a terrible accident, police revealed.
Witnesses stated that it looked like Jones passed out on the ride, which would have allowed her to fall out of the bucket.
All three piers were shut down by Morey’s out of respect for Jones’ family.
“Thus far there has been no indication of mechanical or operational failure, but the investigation is on-going, and when we have more information, we will report that,” says Will Morey, President of Morey’s Piers.
The Wildwood Police and the NJ Department of Community Affairs and their Division of Codes and Standards are investigating the accident.
