Mobile, AL — A two-vehicle accident involving an 18-wheeler and a charter bus injured 26 band students, who were on their way to Orlando on a trip organized by parents. The bus accident occurred on Interstate 10 at around 12:34 a.m., at the 7-mile marker in the Grand Bay area, reported AL.com.
Alabama State Troopers reported that two charter buses were transporting 98 students from the Felipe/Del Rio Consolidate Independent School District in Del Rio, Texas to Orlando, Fla. when the accident occurred. The trip is not a school-sponsored activity.
The semi-truck reportedly overturned in the eastbound lanes of the highway. The first bus served to miss the tractor-trailer, but clipped it instead. The second charter bus was not involved in the crash.
Responding emergency crews rushed 26 students to local hospitals for treatment of injuries. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
One student remains hospitalized with liver and lung injuries and was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for treatment. Two other students remain hospitalized, with one suffering from a leg injury and the other suffering from facial injuries.
Two band directors, five chaperones and a 13-year-old sibling of one of the band students were among the students on the trip.
A full investigation into the bus accident is underway.
