Kittitas County, WA — Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in a single-vehicle accident that killed two 16-year-olds and seriously injured a 15-year-old on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred in rural Kittitas County, on Coleman Canyon Road, about 15 miles north of Ellensburg, just before midnight, reported KOMO News.
According to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, three teens were traveling south on Coleman Canyon Road when their vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned. The vehicle landed on its hood in a draw on the east side of the road, in an area known as “The Orchard.”
The driver of the car, 16-year-old Ellensburg High School student Taylor Lanning, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency crews.
A 16-year-old Kittitas High School Student, identified as Colby Allemand, was a passenger in the car and was killed in the crash. Allemand was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Another passenger, Kassidy Gilmore, a 15-year-old Kittitas High School student, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where she was listed in serious but stable condition.
Police investigations revealed that the teens had been camping with other students further up Coleman Canyon Road and were drinking.
The victims were reportedly last seen around 8:30 p.m., when one of the campers heard their vehicle leave. When they didn’t return, other campers started looking for them and came across the crash site and called for help.
Investigations into the deadly automobile accident are underway.
