Los Angeles, CA — A vehicle slammed into a Santa Clarita gas station and caused the awning to collapse, trapping the two people in the car Friday, June 17, 2011. The automobile accident occurred around 2 a.m., at an intersection near Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway, reported the Los Angeles Times.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that a sheriff’s deputy saw a car stopped in an intersection, when the officer tried to pull the vehicle over. The driver subsequently sped off and almost immediately crashed the vehicle into the gas station, which caused the awning to collapse on top of the vehicle.

The accident happened so fast that the deputy didn’t even have time to initiate a pursuit.

The automobile accident caused a small fuel leak, which ignited a fire.

Responding rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate two people in the car, a man and a woman in their mid-20s. Emergency crews transported the occupants to a hospital for treatment of injuries.

Police also stated that there was an unoccupied car under the awning when the accident occurred.

Investigations are underway.
