Winston-Salem Church Van Slams into Utility Poles; 13 Children Hurt, 1 Dead

Winston-Salem, NC — A single-vehicle crash involving a church van injured 13 children and killed the driver on Monday, June 21, 2011. The automobile accident occurred at 4:07 p.m. in the 2900 block of Waughtown Street in Winston-Salem, reported WXII12.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, a 2002 Ford Econoline van driven by Cedric Hopper, 43, was traveling west on Waughtown Street when the van slammed into a utility pole. The van then continued west across the intersection of Reynolds Park Boulevard and Waughtown Street where it hit another utility police near Hope Street.

The church van was transporting 13 children at the time of the automobile accident. Forsyth County Emergency Medical Services treated all 13 children at the scene before they were released to their parents.

Hopper was transported to North Carolina Baptist Hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead.

The Winston-Salem Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the fatal automobile accident. It is unknown what caused the accident.

The van is reportedly owned by Emmanuel Baptist Church.
