Harrisburg, PA — A two-vehicle rollover crash involving a school bus left 23 people with injuries on Sunday, June 26, 2011. The school bus accident occurred on Interstate 81 just south of Exit 17, in the Guilford Township, reported CNN.
Pennsylvania State Police reported that a Cadillac was trying to pass the school bus when it failed to see the oncoming traffic. The driver of the Cadillac, 79-year-old Edward Shaffer of Hagerstown, Maryland, over corrected and swerved the path of the bus, causing the crash.
The impact sent Shaffer’s vehicle into a ditch, as well as the school bus. The school bus hit a guardrail and then rolled onto its roof.
The school bus was reportedly transporting 22 people to a children’s camp when the accident occurred.
Rescue crews extricated three children who were pinned in the wreckage of the bus. Shaffer had to be extricated from his vehicle as well.
Responding emergency crews rushed everyone on the bus to area hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Six school bus passengers were transported to Waynesboro Hospital, the remaining occupants and Shaffer were transported to Chambersburg Hospital.
Shaffer was also transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
Investigations are underway.
