WV Mining Accident: Miner Killed in Wall Collapse at Rhino Eastern Mine

Bolt, WV — A work-related accident left a 33-year-old miner dead at a mine operation in Bolt, when a wall collapsed and crushed the miner to death. The fatal mining accident occurred around 1:50 a.m., at Rhino Eastern’s Eagle No. 1 mine, reported the Register-Herald.

According to the State Office of Miner’s Health Safety and Training officials, Joseph M. Cassell, 33, of Glen Daniel was cleaning/shoveling along the rib to set timbers when the brow, which was 32 feet long and measured 100 inches high and 37 inches thick, collapsed and crushed Cassell.

The exact cause of the wall collapse is under investigation.

Cassell was reportedly apart of a four-person crew that was setting timbers.

MSHA, the State Office of Miners’ Health and Rhino Eastern are investigating the fatal mining accident.

MSHA reported that this mining accident is the seventh coal mining fatality in 2011.
