Boston, MA — An escalator malfunction at MBTA’s Back Bay Station caused a pileup of people on their way to the Bruins parade on Saturday, June 18, 2011, leaving many with minor injuries. The escalator accident occurred on an escalator that led upstairs from Track 2 of the commuter rail platform between 10 and 10:30 a.m., reported Boston.com.
According to officials, the escalator suddenly stopped, lurched forward, and then began moving rapidly in reverse for five to 10 seconds before it came to a stop. The malfunction knocked several people into a pile at the bottom on the escalator.
“It went down very, very fast. I’ve never seen anything like it…because it was full, there was nowhere to go, and people fell on us and we fell on people,” said Jennifer Nottage, 32, of Attleboro to news sources.
Five people were treated for injuries at the scene by responding emergency crews, which included cuts and abrasions. No one was reportedly taken to the hospital.
The MBTA said that they are investigating the cause of the escalator malfunction, and the escalator in question has been put out of service pending the completion of the investigation.
The inquiry into the escalator accident is ongoing.
