Los Angeles, CA — Three hikers who climbed over a guardrail at a popular waterfall at Yosemite National Park are feared dead after being swept over the waterfall. The hikers plummeted over the Vernal Fall on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, reported the Associated Free Press.
According to officials, the three hikers were on a day trip with family and friends when they decided to climb over a guardrail, and got into the rapids about 25 feet from the top of the Vernal Fall.
“The area is signed as a dangerous area, and the group had crossed a metal guardrail placed there to keep visitors away from the dangerous fast-moving water,” read a park statement.
Park officials stated that the water levels are higher than normal, which are running faster because of a relatively cool spring and summer.
A search and rescue party was launched, but they have yet to recover the hikers. The Yosemite National Park Rangers are continuing the search efforts.
