Car, Commuter Train Accident in Suburban Chicago Kills 2, Derails Train Car

Chicago, IL — Two women were killed and several others were injured after a commuter train partially derailed after being involved in a collision with a car in suburban Chicago. The train accident occurred Thursday, July 21, 2011, in the suburb of Oak Forest, reported the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

According to police, the front car of the commuter train, which was headed for the city, derailed when it collided with a car and dragged it for about a quarter of a mile following the impact.

The two women inside the of car were killed in the train crash, Oak Forest fire officials reported. The identities of the women are currently being withheld.

Police stated that there were injuries among the train passengers, but they were considered to be “minor.” Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest confirmed that they received two patients at the hospital for treatment. One of the patients was treated and released.

The train was transporting 89 passengers at the time of the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the fatal train accident.
