Whiteside County, IL — Four corn detasselers were electrocuted while in a Whiteside County field, leaving them seriously injured. The work-related accident occurred Monday, July 25, 2011, just before 9 a.m. in a field on Luther Road, south of Starr Road in rural Tampico, reported WQAD.
According to police, about 72 detasselers were working in a field when four of the workers were electrocuted for unknown reasons. The cause of the electrocution has yet to be released.
Responding emergency crews rushed four workers to Community General Hospital for treatment of their severe injuries.
Other detasselers were taken to a staging area at the Rock Falls Fire Department for a medical evaluation, and from there they were either taken to a hospital or released to a parent or guardian.
The identities of the victims and detasselers are being withheld due to their ages and medical treatment.
Investigations into the work-related accident are underway.
According to Wikipedia, detasseling is the process of removing the pollen-producing flowers (the tassel) from the tops of the corn plants and placing them on the ground, as a form of pollination control.
