Washington, D.C. — Thirty-six million pounds of ground turkey is being recalled by Cargill, after the tainted meat contributed to the death of a California man and 76 other salmonella illnesses, reported CBS News.

The Salmonella outbreak was first reportedly in March, which stretched across 26 U.S. states.

The product recall, which was announced on Wednesday evening, August 3, 2011, includes fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at Cargill’s Springdale, Ark., plant from Feb 20 through August 2.

The USDA and the CDC are still trying to find the source of the salmonella outbreak, but a leftover turkey package located at a victim’s house did test positive for the strain of salmonella linked to the outbreak.

All ground turkey production at the Springdale plant has been suspended until the source of the salmonella contamination is found.

Michigan and Ohio reported having the most reports of illness, with 10 each, as a result of the contamination. Texas reported nine illnesses, followed by Illinois with seven; California, six; and Pennsylvania, five.

Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin all reported having at least one illness.

If you have purchased the recalled ground turkey, it is still safe to consume if it is cooked to 165 degrees, say officials. Also, remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds after handling the meat.

Symptoms of salmonella infections include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and a fever within eight to 72 hours after consuming the tainted product.
