Kansas City, MO — A Warrior Dash participant died on Saturday, July 30, 2011, after collapsing on the course, while 13 others were rushed to the hospital because of the extreme heat, reported KMBC.
According to the victim’s family, Jeremiah Morris, 28, was rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the course, which has several obstacles like mud pits, cargo nets and fire during the 3.1 mile run.
Doctors took Morris’ temperature and got a core temperature reading of 111 degrees. Morris’ parents say their son died because of thinned blood and damage that was done to his organs.
Emergency crews also transported six racers on Saturday and seven racers on Sunday to area hospitals. The last leg of the race was canceled on Sunday, because of the extreme heat.
Red Frog Events acknowledged Morris’ death in a statement, which read:
“We are truly saddened by the news of Jeremiah Morris’ passing. From everyone at Red Frog Events, we express our deepest condolences and sympathy to his family and friends. As with all our races, safety is our number one priority and we took numerous precautions based on the weather forecast for this weekend’s race in Kansas City. We worked closely with local authorities and took precautions including bringing in double the standard amount of water trucks and cooling stations and providing triple the amount of water bottles for all racers. Additionally, we had our race volunteers roaming the course encouraging everyone to drink water frequently throughout the race and festival to remain hydrated. We care deeply about our racers and our thoughts are with the family and friends of Morris at this time.”
In Michigan over the weekend, another Warrior Dash participant was also rushed to the hospital for injuries he sustained while participating in the event. James Sa, 21, was paralyzed from the chest down after diving into a mud pit.
About 15,000 people participated in the 2-day Warrior Dash event in Kansas City.
