Pensacola, FL — A Marine who went into cardiac arrest during remedial swim training has died over the weekend after being declared brain dead on Friday morning, August 5, 2011, reported West News 9.
The 2nd Lieutenant Midland Marine, Patrick Wayland, 24, was participating remedial swim training at the base’s water survival school, when he went into cardiac arrest on August 1.
Wayland received CPR by responding medical professionals and was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
Even though Wayland was pronounced brain dead, he remained on a ventilator while organ recipients were located.
On Saturday, Wayland was taken off life support.
A full investigation into the death is underway.
A family friend told NewsWest 9 in a statement: “Patrick enlisted with the goal to save lives, and even though it wasn’t in the sense that we all imagine; five of his organs were able to be donated to fellow marines whose families had similar prayers of a miracle would happen for their kids. His untimely death served as a blessing for those families and Patrick would be proud knowing what he has done for them.”
