Charleston, WV — A mining accident in an underground mine in Logan County killed a Williamson man early Monday morning, August 15, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 6:10 a.m. in an Arch Coal Inc. subsidiary Mingo Logan Coal Co.’s Mountaineer II Mine near Sharples, reported the Sunday Gazette Mail.

According to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, Charles M. Hall, 46, was installing cribs, which is a type of roof support, in the mined area of the mine’s longwall section when the accident occurred.

Hall was reportedly helping to prepare for the move of the longwall machine when a rock fall occurred.

Responding EMTs rushed Hall to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hall’s death marked the 13th U.S. coal-mining fatality in 2011, according to MSHA reports.

Last year, the Mountaineer II Mine operation was cited for more than 300 federal safety citations and was fined over $320,000.

Investigations into the fatal mining accident are underway.
