Jeffersonville, IN — A work-related accident killed a Jeffboat maintenance worker Friday morning, August 19, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 6:45 a.m., in the Jeffboat boatyard, reported the Courier-Journal.
According to officials, Steve Duncan, 54, of Pekin, Ind., was repairing a machine called a “buggy,” which is used to help support and transport barges. While Duncan was working on the machine, it activated, causing the hydraulic jack to lift and crush him against a barge.
The Clark County Coroner said Duncan died of compressional asphyxia and blunt-force trauma.
Since May 2010, two Jeffboat employees were killed in work-related accidents. Both of those workers died in falls.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigated Jeffboats three times last year, which resulted in 33 safety violations and $55,905 in fines. Those violations and fees were later lowered to 31 violations, including 20 serious violations and two repeat violations, and $53,155 in fines.
OSHA is investigating the latest fatal Jeffboat work-related accident.
In a statement, American Commercial Lines said “This morning, an industrial accident occurred at Jeffboat resulting in the fatality of one of our employees. We have initiated an investigation of the accident and are in the process of notifying family members. We are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Jeffboat team, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his co-workers during this difficult time.”
