Orland, IN — An industrial accident at a Steuben County chicken-processing plant left a maintenance worker dead from a traumatic brain injury on Thursday, September 1, 2011. The fatal workplace accident occurred around 10 a.m. at the Miller Poultry plant, located just south of Orland, reported the Journal Gazette.
Officials reported that Samuel Worrell, 25, was killed by machinery that is used to unload crates of chickens after they arrive at the processing plant. Worrell and two other workers had reportedly just finished servicing the machine and were testing it when Worrell was fatally injured.
Responding emergency crews tried to resuscitate Worrell, but their efforts were not successful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Steuben County Coroner cited the cause of death as blunt-force trauma to the head.
A Miller Poultry spokesperson stated the death was not a result of negligence, because the worker operating the machinery had asked whether the other workers were clear before testing. The operator says he was given the all clear.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the fatal industrial accident.
