Juneau, AK — A mine accident at the Kensington gold mine in Alaska killed a worker Wednesday morning, September 7, 2011. The fatal workplace accident took place at the Kensington Mine, located about 45 miles north of Juneau, Reuters reported.
According to Idaho-based Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp., the parent company of the Kensington gold mine, the miner was underground at the time of the fatal workplace accident. Details surrounding the accident have not been released and are under investigation.
“It was while he was working, and he was the only person that was hurt,” said the Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp. spokesman, Tony Ebersole.
The victim was identified as 30-year-old Joe Tagaban, who sustained injuries while performing regular duties at the mine, reported Forbes. Tagaban had reportedly been employed for the mining company for over a year.
Investigations into the fatal mining accident are underway. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration are expected to investigate the mining death.
