Minneapolis, MN — Nine college campuses across the nation have adopted a new drinking policy, which has students outraged and it has nothing to do with alcohol. The sale of water bottles has been banned to “save money and the environment,” reports CBS Minnesota.
Two college campuses in Minnesota—Macalester and St. Benedict College—have banned the sale of plastic water bottles, but students can still bring the bottles onto campus.
The colleges are trying to encourage students to use reusable water bottles, but students say they are limiting their choices while at school.
The St. Benedict asserts that they aren’t trying to restrict student’s access to water, because they have installed 31 hydration stations across campus to refill whatever bottle they may have.
“The policy does not say that students can’t have bottled water. We’re not going to sell it in the bookstore or dining facilities here and we’re not going to use college funds to purchase bottled watered, but we’re not saying to students, they can’t drink bottled water, it’s their right,” Judy Purman, director of sustainability, said to CBS.
