North Dakota Oil Rig Explosion, Fire Killed 2 Workers, Severely Injured 2 Others

Bismarck, ND — An oil rig explosion and fire at a newly drilled oil well in western North Dakota left two workers dead and two others severely injured on Wednesday, September 14, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. in the Williston area, reported the Washington Post.

The oil rig explosion left 21-year-old Brendan Wegner of Montello, Wis., dead at the scene. Ray Hardy, of Mohall was rushed to a St. Paul, Minn. hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.

Two others, identified as Doug Hysjulien of Williston and Michael Twinn of Tioga, were rushed to Regions Hospital in St. Paul in critical condition. Co-workers reported that the workers were severely burned.

The men were working at a workover rig owned by Carlson Well Services Inc. when the accident occurred.

Details surrounding the accident and how it occurred were not reported. Investigations are ongoing.

The North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance agency reported that five oil field-related deaths occurred in fiscal 2011, which is an increase from three deaths in fiscal 2010.
