Reno, NV — A plane taking part in an air race in Reno fell from the sky and crashed into a crowd of spectators, killing 10 people and injuring around 70 people. The World War II-era plane crashed at the annual National Championship Air Races and Air Show on Friday, September 16, 2011, reported CNN.
According to officials, it is not immediately known why the aircraft nosedived, but the plane was equipped with data and video recording devices which they hope they can use to determine what caused the fatal crash.
The pilot, 74-year-old Jimmy Leeward, and six others were killed on the tarmac, while three others succumbed to their life-threatening injuries while being treated at area hospitals. Nearly 70 others sustained injuries when the P-51 aircraft plummeted into the crowd, according to officials.
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are using the plane’s “box,” which records altitude, latitude and oil pressure of the plane, as well as video from an outward-facing video camera on the plane to help determine what had happened.
Investigators uncovered several memory cards, which could have come from either device. They were sent to an NTSB laboratory for analysis.
A full investigation is expected to take six to nine months to complete.
