Dexter, MI — The driver of a horse-drawn wagon is in the hospital after being run over at a Dexter farmers’ market on Sunday, September 25, 2011. The accident occurred at Jenny’s Farm Market on Island Lake Road around 1:50 p.m., reported the Detroit Free Press.
According to the Washtenaw County Sherriff’s Office, the 23-year-old woman was driving a horse-drawn wagon with five adults and six children on board when the wagon started going down a slight incline. This caused the horses to pick up speed and lose control. The woman reportedly fell forward off the wagon, in between the two horses.
Police are still trying to determine if the horses stepped on her or if the wagon ran her over.
The runaway wagon continued for about 100 yards before it ran into the back of another wagon.
None of the people on the wagon were seriously injured in the incident. One man was reportedly taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
A medical helicopter airlifted the unidentified wagon driver to the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor for medical treatment. Officials were initially worried that she may have been paralyzed, because she was not moving her legs.
While investigations are ongoing, the wagon rides at Jenny’s have been stopped.
The sheriff’s office and Michigan safety inspectors are looking into the wagon accident.
