Maywood, IL — A car slammed into an apartment building in west suburban Maywood, killing a 14-year-old girl and injuring her brother on Monday, September 26, 2011. The vehicle crashed through the window of a basement apartment around 11:30 p.m., on the 800 block of South 19th Avenue, reported NBC Chicago.
According to police, the driver of the silver Hyundai was shot at near 19th and Harrison, which is just a few blocks away, before slamming into the apartment building. A witness told NBC Chicago that “he heard several gunshots, and many saw the car driving extremely fast, never hitting the breaks, before slamming into the house.”
The crash killed Proviso East High School student Dominique Thomas, who was pronounced dead at the scene. She was reportedly sleeping on the couch when the accident occurred. Dominique’s 12-year-old brother was also hit and was taken to Loyola Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.
The male passenger of the vehicle fled the scene following the crash.
Police have not revealed the driver’s injuries or if he had sustained gunshot wounds.
Police are seeking the public’s help in the investigation.
