Ventura, CA — A veteran oilman lost his life during a work-related accident on a drilling rig outside of Ventura on Monday, September 26, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred in School Canyon, about 4 miles from Ventura Avenue in the hills east of north Ventura just after 5 p.m., reported the Ventura County Star.
Oscar Zamudio, 34, was killed when he was pinned to the oil rig by a fallen metal beam, while on a platform about 20 feet off of the ground.
Co-workers immediately began to rig straps over the beam to lift it off of Zamudio, who then administered aid until emergency crews arrived at the remote site.
An AMR ambulance, a medic engine from the Ventura City Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Air Unit responded to the scene.
As they were about to hoist Zamudio from the platform to airlift him to Ventura County Medical Center, he succumbed to his life-threatening injuries and died. He was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m.
An autopsy revealed that Zamudio died from crush injuries to his pelvis.
Zamudio’s death marks the second fatality to occur in five years for his employer, Santa Maria-based Kenai Drilling Limited. Since 2001, OSHA had fined Kenai Drilling for violations in three accidents, including a death in 2006.
Investigations into the fatal work-related accident are underway. Investigators with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct their own investigation.
