Vallejo, CA — A Vallejo firefighter is recovering after sustaining serious burn injuries while rescuing a paralyzed man, whose bed caught on fire Thursday, September 29, 2011. The fire occurred at 3:30 p.m. in a mobile home on Goldenrod Street in the Olympia of Vallejo mobile home park where the man lived alone, reported the Times Herald Online.
According to fire officials, the paraplegic, who is in his 40s, called for help when his bed caught on fire.
“We knew there was a man trapped in bed, and when we got on scene, they could hear the man yelling for help, so they forced entry and tried to rescue him,” acting Fire Chief Paige Meyer said to the Times Herald. “The fire was really going at that point, and the firefighter started dragging him out but he had to bail because the heat was so intense.”
The man, who remains unidentified, and a firefighter were injured in the fire. They were both rushed by ambulance to Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center for treatment.
The firefighter suffered third-degree burns on his hands, second-degree burns to his face and first- and second-degree burns to his back. He was later transferred to the burn unit at San Francisco’s St. Francis Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
The paraplegic suffered life-threatening third-degree burns to most of his body. He is reportedly in “grave, critical condition.”
The fire destroyed the bedroom of the mobile home and caused an estimated $25,000 in damages.
Investigations into the fire are underway.
