Niobrara Man Found Dead in Sandpit Following Bulldozer Accident near Kearney

Kearney, NE — A Niobrara man was found dead Friday morning, September 30, 2011, when the bulldozer he was operating went into a sandpit near the city of Kearney wastewater treatment plant. The fatal workplace accident occurred around 9:41 a.m. at a sandpit located southeast of Kearney, near the treatment plant at 507 Cherry Avenue, reported the Kearney Hub.

According to the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office, the 75-year-old unidentified man had been working on a bulldozer when it went into the sandpit. The pool in the sandpit is about 30-feet-deep.

The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time, while the family is being notified of the death.

A rescue effort was launched by members of the fire department’s dive team, who located the man’s body at around noon.

Investigations into what caused the bulldozer to go into the water are underway.

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and Kearney Police Department’s Fatality Accident Investigation team are investigating the workplace accident.
