Temple, TX — A construction worker lost part of his arm in a construction accident Tuesday morning, October 11, 2011, when his lower left arm was severed in an auger. The construction accident occurred at the intersection of FM 439 and Jamie Drive just outside of Belton at around 11 a.m., reported KCENTV.com.

The construction worker, 56-year-old Robert Shows was trying to move from the auger platform onto the ground when he slipped, and put his arm into an opening the size of shoe box that housed the auger of the dirt remover. The auger sheared off his lower left arm just below the elbow.

Shows was using the auger to drill through the dirt in order to install new water lines inside a 25-foot by 40-foot trench.

Responding emergency crews airlifted to Scott and White Hospital for treatment of his serious injuries. Shows’ limb was recovered and it was placed on ice.

Investigations into the construction accident are underway. It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) will be conducting an investigation.
