5 Kids, 1 Adult Killed When Van Slammed into Semi-Truck in Eastern Colorado

Kit Carson, CO — Six people were killed, including five children, when a van slammed into the back of a stopped 18-wheeler in eastern Colorado. The fatal crash occurred Thursday, October 13, 2011, on U.S. 287 south of Kit Carson, about 130 miles southeast of Denver around 7:30 a.m., reported USA Today.

According to officials, the tractor-trailer was stopped in traffic in a construction zone when the Dodge van hit the back of the stationary cattle trailer, which was empty at the time.

The collision killed the driver of the van, Howard Mitchell, and his five foster children. There were 13 people in the van at the time of the crash.

Responding emergency crews rushed seven others to area hospitals for treatment of injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The driver of the semi-truck also sustained serious injuries in the wreck.

The Post reported that Mitchell and his wife, Melody, operated a group home and were caring for eight to 10 foster children.

Investigations into the fatal accident are underway.
