Sioux City, IA — A construction accident at Briar Cliff University left a North Sioux City man dead when he was crushed by falling masonry. The fatal workplace accident occurred around 7:58 a.m. at an addition that is being built on the Heelan Hall, reported the Sioux City Journal.
According to officials, the construction worker was rushed to a local hospital after he was crushed by the falling masonry. After arriving at the hospital for medical treatment, the man’s injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead.
His identity is being withheld at this time.
“Briar Cliff University is deeply saddened by the death of the construction worker,” Briar Cliff President Beverly J. Wharton said in the statement, as reported by SCJ. “Our deepest condolences are extended to his family. Our campus community is praying for him and his family.”
The renovation and addition in which the victim was working on at the time of the accident will include science laboratories, classrooms, a four-story atrium and upgrades of existing heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.
Investigations into the fatal construction accident are underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct their own investigation.
