Minneapolis, MN — A construction accident in a section of the Central Corridor light-rail project left a worker without a hand or foot on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. The construction accident occurred near the flyover bridge that is being constructed over I-35W between the Cedar-Riverside and Metrodome station on the Hiawatha line, according to CBS Local Minnesota.
According to reports, the driver of a large fork truck apparently lost control on a dirt embankment, causing a man to be pinned inside the cab of the truck when it overturned onto its side.
Police also reported that they believe the victim’s leg became pinned between the equipment and the ground.
Responding emergency crews, along with fellow workers, were able to pull the victim to safety by lifting the front end loader.
The victim was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center where he underwent surgery. He ultimately lost his hand and foot, which couldn’t be saved in surgery.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will not be conducting an investigation into the construction accident. Instead the contractor, Ames Construction, will be conducting an investigation and will be reporting to the Central Corridor Project office.
Investigations are underway.
