Shreveport, LA — A serious accident at the Louisiana State Fair Tuesday, November 1, 2011, had left a 4-year-old boy in critical condition after becoming trapped under a ride. The state fair accident took place at the Kiddie Land area of the fair on a ride called the “Demolition Derby,” reported The News Star.
According to reports, 4-year-old Sheldon Lewis was apart of a group from Red River Head Start, who were at the fair.
Witnesses reported that the “Demolition Derby” ride had stopped, but the floor of the ride began to move, which trapped Lewis between the floor of the ride and one of the ride cars. The ride’s operator stated that she was helping other children off the ride, when another child apparently activated the ride.
There is reportedly only six inches between the floor and the ride, in which Lewis became trapped.
Responding emergency crews rushed to the scene, which included as many as 12 fire units and six police units, to help free the boy. Lewis was reportedly in and out of consciousness before he was rushed to LSU Hospital in Shreveport.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the accident.
