Brooklyn, NY — An erroneous decision is believed to have caused a deadly construction accident at a Brooklyn condo complex, leaving one person dead and five others injured. The fatal work-related accident occurred Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. at Brighton Fifth St. in Brighton Beach, reported New York Daily News.
According to reports, the steel skeleton of the condo complex collapsed when a bad decision was made to pour concrete from the top of the unfinished five-story building down.
Responding rescue crews worked frantically to pull three men from the rubble. Another man was rescued by using a blowtorch to cut through the damaged steel.
Five injured construction workers were transported to area hospitals, where one man went into cardiac arrest and later died.
Preliminary investigations showed that improper pouring of fresh concrete caused the fatal construction accident. The concrete is supposed to be poured at the lower floors first to solidify the building’s base.
The contractor on the site is reportedly SP&K Construction.
Investigations into the construction accident are underway. Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation as well.
