Federal Way, WA — A firefighter was critically injured Sunday morning, November 20, 2011, when he was hit by a vehicle on the shoulder of a highway while responding to a rollover accident. The collision occurred on Interstate 5, just north of 320th Street at about 5:20 a.m., reported the Seattle Post Intelligencer.
According to officials, South King Fire & Rescue responded to the scene of a previous rollover crash on the southbound lanes of I-5, and were assessing the situation when a southbound 1996 Chevrolet Blazer hit the 52-year-old firefighter. The Blazer then narrowly missed the two other fire officials at the scene.
The 26-year-old Burien man, who was driving the Blazer, reportedly lost control on the icy freeway, which caused his vehicle to veer onto the right shoulder and hit Wynn R. Loiland of Gig Harbor, from behind.
Loiland was knocked unconscious from the impact of the collision, which also caused him to sustain a critical head injury. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he is in critical but stable condition with severe head injuries, a collapsed lung, and a broken arm.
The Washington State Patrol is investigating the traffic accident. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the wreck.
