Maxton, NC — An automobile accident along Interstate 74 East killed a Maxton Fire Chief, who was responding to an accident. The fatal traffic accident occurred Sunday, January 8, 2011, just before 10 p.m. at the end of the on-ramp from Cabinet Shop Road exit of I-74, reports the Laurinburg Exchange.
According to the state Highway Patrol reports, Samuel Butler, 52, of Maxton, was attempting to make a U-turn in a 1993 Toyota Camry, when his vehicle was hit by an eastbound tractor-trailer that was traveling at about 60 mph.
Butler was killed on impact.
Butler, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was reportedly trying to get to an accident in the westbound lane at the exit.
The semi-truck driver, Robert Barrett, 37, of Malden, Mass., was not injured in the wreck. He is also not expected to face charges.
Investigations are underway.
