Valparaiso, IN — Two train crew members were injured Friday, January 6, 2011, when three CSX freight trains collided and derailed in rural northwestern Indiana. The train crash occurred about 11 miles northeast of Valparaiso at around 2:15 p.m., according to Reuters.
One CSX train reportedly rear-ended another train, causing it to jack-knife. A third train, which was passing by “got caught up in that jack-knife,” a Porter County Highway Department official said.
Responding emergency crews transported the two train crew members to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The crash also caused officials to evacuate 100 to 200 residents, because of the trains’ hazardous cargo. Three rail cars were reportedly transporting flammable products.
No significant leaks or spills had occurred.
Investigations into the freight train crash are underway.
