Billings, MT — A chair carrying two teenagers detached from the ski lift, causing the teens to fall 35-feet to the ground at Montana’s Red Lodge Mountain ski resort. The accident occurred Wednesday, December 28, 2011, on the Willow Creek ski lift, reported the Los Angeles Times.

It is unknown what caused the chair to separate from the haul rope at this time.

The two 17-year-old boys who were on the chair at the time were injured, but are in stable condition. They did not appear to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

Just two hours before the incident, the lodge shut down the Grizzy Peak ski lift because winds began blowing at more than 35 miles per hour. The Grizzy Peak lift operates on the upper part of the mountain, while the Willow Creek lift runs up the middle portion of the mountain.

The Los Angeles Times reported that resort spokesman Jeff Carroll said the winds had not been blowing as strongly on the lower lift. “Wind is always a concern. We monitor it very closely, especially in regard to our lift operations. We were monitoring wind throughout the day, and I would say at mid-mountain, where this lift operates, our wind conditions were moderate,” Carroll said in an interview with The Times. “With the conditions we were seeing, we thought it was not a problem.”

Investigations into the ski lift accident are underway.
