Los Angeles, CA — A new piece of proposed legislation is aiming to allow students to play on sports teams according to their “gender identity” and not their biological sex, as well as have access to sex-segregated locker rooms. The Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco)-sponsored bill come just days after a law requiring California schools to teach students about gay historical figures, and is likely to spark a heated debate, reported CBS Los Angeles.
The bill—AB 266—is now currently sitting before the Assembly Education Committee.
Under the proposed bill, a girl who claims a male “gender identity” would essentially have the right to try out for a girl’s sports team. The bill also requires that opposite-sex access to sex-segregated facilities,” like a locker room for example.
The controversial bill was originally intended to resolved conflicts in the local governments “and other interests” through the creation of a state sports commission, CBS Los Angeles revealed.
But the bill was revised to include a mandate to permit students “to participate in sex-segregated school programs, activities, and facilities, including athletic teams and competitions, consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”
