New York, NY — Officials have revealed that maintenance work was the likely cause of an elevator accident that killed an advertising executive and injured two others in Midtown on December 14, 2011, reported the New York Times.
Y&R advertising executive Suzanne Hart, 41, stepped on the elevator when it suddenly began to rise. As Hart was halfway onto the elevator it suddenly shot up, without closing its doors first. The woman was subsequently crushed between the elevator and the shaft wall. The two injured people were already inside the elevator when the accident occurred. The injuries the two victims sustained are reportedly considered to be minor, as previously reported in “Freak NYC elevator Accident Kills 1, Injured 2.”
The New York Times reported that Robert LiMandri, the commissioner of the Buildings Department, the work by repairmen from the maintenance company, Transel Elevator, was likely a contributing cause, or the cause, of the accident, based on the investigation so far.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office is continuing to investigate. No charges have been filed at this time.
