Lowell Township, MI — An overpacked church van crashed, killing one and injuring several others when they were ejected from the vehicle. The automobile accident occurred around 6 p.m. on I-96, reported MLive.com
The 2002 Chevy Express van, which is part of a West African church group, was on its way back to Lansing, when the left rear tire blew out as the van was headed east on I-96. The van was carrying 17 people, when it was only meant for 14 passengers.
The driver of the van, a 22-year-old Lansing man, lost control, hit another vehicle and then slid sideways across the highway before overturning and ejecting passengers.
A passenger, Erasto Ombeni, 18, was killed when he was ejected from the van, reported the Lansing State Journal.
Responding emergency crews airlifted several injured passengers to local hospitals for medical treatment.
The occupants of the van ranged in age from 8 months to 23 years.
No one in the vehicle hit by the van were injured.
Investigations are underway.
