Tippecanoe County, IN — Investigations revealed that the cause of a school bus accident that hospitalized eight students was because the former Tippecanoe School Corporation bus driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel, reported WLFI.com.
Bus driver Bev Turner was fired following the accident that occurred Tuesday morning, February 28, 2012, which occurred just before 9:00 a.m. on County Road 300 North near East Tipp Middle School.
The bus reportedly veered off the road and drove down into a ditch, where it collided with a concrete structure head-on.
There were 37 students aboard the bus at the time of the accident. Eight students were injured and they were transported by ambulance to an area hospital for medical treatment.
All of the injuries were reportedly minor, which included cuts, sprains and scrapes.
Turner was also taken to the hospital for treatment and was released.
“Safe transportation to and from school is of paramount importance to TSC. The bus driver was terminated because her actions do not meet school board safety standards. We want parents to be aware that a new driver, who has been properly trained, will be covering that route,” Superintendent Dr. Scott Hanback said to WLFI.
