Tallahassee, FL — A bill allowing student-led prayer in public schools has been “overwhelmingly” approved in the Florida Legislature on Thursday, March 1, 2012, reports USA Today.
The bill will allow school districts to determine whether to allow students to deliver “inspirational messages” at public events, but prohibits teacher and school employee participation.
Until now a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1962 found state-sponsored prayer in schools unconstitutional.
The bill is up for interpretation regarding its “inspirational” concept, which can include messages ranging from the Pledge of Allegiance to Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech,” USA Today reported.
Others argue that the bill can invite “religious in-doctrine” or the spread of false information.
Governor Rick Scott is expected to sign the bill.
