Chatham, NJ — A New Jersey CVS pharmacy mistakenly gave parents a cancer drug instead of fluoride pills for their children’s teeth, reports ABC News.
The CVS pharmacy on Main Street accidentally gave parents tamoxifen, a breast cancer-fighting drug, instead of chewable fluoride tablets.
The drug mix-up went unfound for at least two months or possibly longer, and no reports of documented illnesses due to the cancer drugs have been received, officials reported.
CVS released a statement concerning the drug mix-up: “The health and safety of our customers is our highest priority and we are deeply sorry for the mistake that occurred at our Chatham, NJ pharmacy. Beginning last week, we have contacted or have left messages for every family whose child was dispensed a 0.5 mg fluoride prescription from our Chatham location within the past 60 days.”
The cause of the medication mix-up is still under investigation.
Pharmaceutical specialists say the children who ingested the cancer drug won’t likely suffer any adverse health problems, MSNBC reported.
Officials believes as many as 50 families were given the wrong drug between Dec. 1 and Feb. 20.
